Why Worcester Needs Great Schools

Dear Friends,

I have become more convinced over my last decade of service in public office that Worcester’s future prosperity depends on what we do for Worcester’s public schools, not tomorrow but today. Everyone who lives or works in the city has a stake in public education. We all need to participate to make our schools better. Worcester has made significant progress in building a strong urban school system, but we must make substantial new investments to improve school facilities, increase operational funding, and leverage new resources from the community. We must do all of this to make sure we have great schools that are the key to helping our city prosper.

I have written the attached report to offer some ideas on why and how we might do this. I hope it makes a convincing case that new investments in schools will benefit everyone who lives here. Most important, I hope is that this document will be a starting point for a community-wide conversation about how we can work together to make Worcester’s one of the best urban school systems in the nation.

In the last six months our School Committee and City Council has held a series of joint meetings to explore ways to help improve our schools. This white paper has a set of important recommendations, but it is only one perspective. I hope that you will read this paper and I hope it will persuade you to join the conversation on how we can help make Worcester’s the best urban school system in the country.

Please feel free to call or email me if you have ideas, comments   or other thoughts. Thanks
