Thank you to Dianne Williamson for her column today that questioned the failed logic of the city attempting to sue attorney Ed Ryan. Ryan filed a lawsuit on behalf of his client, Nga Truong, who spent close to three years in prison for confessing to murder her child after a grueling interrogation by Worcester Police. The confession was later thrown out by a state judge, who was critical of the police conduct in the case because Ms. Truong, who was 16 at the time, wasn’t given a “genuine opportunity” to consult a parent or lawyer. The details in this case that have been disclosed by the media are deeply disturbing and an NPR story and video of the interrogation can be seen in the link below. While I have deep respect for the work of our city solicitor David Moore, the action taken by the city to go after Mr. Ryan attorney is wrong on many levels. While I only know the details that have been covered in the media, as an elected official and as a citizen I feel that the city’s response from the start of this case has been wrong. Under our form of government, the Councils authority in these cases is significantly limited, but I hope we can find a way to have an open public discussion about this case and about what I believe to be the cities flawed response to it.
